Live for today

Dr. Samuel Johnson is quoted as saying "Nothing heightens a man's senses so much as the prospect of being hanged in the morning."

Ecclesiastes 8:15 So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, And drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works.

Luke 12:19 'And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry."'

When we are young, an invincible, we can eat, drink and be merry - putting aside many things "for the future". We seem to know that the future is "out there" but it just simply doesn't matter much today.

If we knew for a fact at a young age, that we would not die until a certain age, we would most likely live even more dangerously than we do. But, when we know for certainty that our life if finite, our attitude changes completely. Our priorities are completely rearranged. For many, it is for the better. For many, it is for the worse - they are full of regret, fear and anger.

God says, in the Bible, that we should live a happy life. We should enjoy whatever He has given us to enjoy. The date of our death, for most of us, is unknown. Live today as if you will be hanged tomorrow morning.

What you say cannot be "unsaid"

John Sewel, a prominent Cadillac dealer in the Dallas area, is quoted as saying "You can shear a sheep for many years, but you can only skin it once."

We need to make wise decisions. Not all of them can be "undone".

I recall the story about the grandfather who was appalled by statements made by his grandson that had truly hurt someone. The boy simply did not understand why it was som important.

The grandfather gave a box of nails and a hammer to the grandson, then told him to go out to the back forty and hammer all of the nails into the wooden fence. When the boy was done, the grandfather told him to go out and take all of the nails out of the fence.

The grandson was frustrated, but did as he was told. When he was done, he went back to his grandfather and was told to look at the fence. The nails were gone, he pointed out, but the holes remained.

When we say something, we need to realize that the impact can oftern never be repaired.

Proverbs:
12:25 Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad.
15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
15:23 A man has joy by the answer of his mouth, And a word spoken in due season, how good it is!
25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.

James 3:
3 Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.
4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind.
8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.
11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening?
12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

John Muir quote:

"Climb the mountains and get their good tidings; nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine into flowers; the winds will blow their freshness into you and the storms their energy; and cares will drop off like autumn leaves."

Psalm 46:
6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge.
8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, Who has made desolations in the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire.
10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

Don't rely on own knowledge - seek wise counsel

Woodrow Wilson is quoted as saying "I use not only all the brains I have, but all I can borrow."

Proverbs 1:5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,

Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But he who heeds counsel is wise.

Proverbs 19:20 Listen to counsel and receive instruction, That you may be wise in your latter days.

Proverbs 20:18 Plans are established by counsel; By wise counsel wage war.

Prover 24:6 For by wise counsel you will wage your own war, And in a multitude of counselors there is safety.

Isaiah 19:11 Surely the princes of Zoan are fools; Pharaoh's wise counselors give foolish counsel. How do you say to Pharaoh, "I am the son of the wise, The son of ancient kings?"

Daniel 2:14 Then with counsel and wisdom Daniel answered Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon;

Surpassing the Master?

Nell Elam, teacher at the Starkville, Mississippi public school is quoted as saying "The disciple who doesn't surpass his master, fails him."

Jesus says the same. And, in this time of greater medicine for treatment of severe diseases, we can believe it. In His time, the world did not have the ability to move mountains as we do today on a routine basis to make roads and to build cities. Heart disease and cancer, the two leading causes of death, can be controlled and in many cased cured. In His time, only He had that power. He still has that power and more. But we have learned to do many things, and to progress.

John 14:
12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
13 "And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 "If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments.
16 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever--
17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
18 "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.
19 "A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.
20 "At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"
23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.
25 "These things I have spoken to you while being present with you.
26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

Think Good Thoughts; Think God Thoughts

John Williams, a tennis pro from South Seas Plantation on Captiva Island, Florida is quoted as saying "You can control the way you play by the way you think."

Of course, he was talking about tennis, but this concept is also a Biblical direction for playing the game of LIFE.

Philippians 4:
1 Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.
2 I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.
3 And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is at hand.
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

Maria Robinson

I was in the waiting room at the Allen Presbyterian Hospital recently (again) for some tests. The reception area had a paper posted that caught my eye and I asked for a copy. This quote is attributed to Maria Robinson. I had never heard of her, so I went online (of course). She apparently is a writer with many, many published quotes. I found this one to be at the top of the list.

"Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."

We all make mistakes, and many of us have dwelt on them - regretting them and making them a much larger part of our lives than they merit. The past is gone and we can't change it, but we can change our behavior starting this very moment. That is what the Bible means about "overcoming" and "repentance". It means "never doing that again."

Learn from the mistakes of the past and change the behaviors of the future. God will forgive the past.

Don't drift through life - Do something!

"I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving; To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it -- but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

James 4:
13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit";
14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that."
16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

We are not to focus on what we DON'T HAVE!

Peter Drucker quote - "The great mystery isn't that people do things badly, but that they occasionally do a few things well. The only thing that is universal is incompetence. Strength is always specific! Nobody ever commented, for example, that the great violinist Jascha Heifetz couldn't play the trumpet very well."

God has given each of us a gift. Our challenge is to identify it and then to use it for HIS purpose.

We are never to focus on what we DON'T HAVE. That is to question God's purpose.

1 Corinthians 12:
12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For in fact the body is not one member but many.
15 If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?
16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?
17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?
18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.
19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be?
20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.
21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."
22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.
23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty,
24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it,
25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.
26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?
30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
31 But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

Be Happy

Benjamin Franklin - "Wine is a constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy."

Ecclesiastes 2:
24 Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.
25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?
26 For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

Ecclesiastes 3:
12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,
13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor-it is the gift of God.

Mastering Love

"Some day after mastering the winds, the waves, the tide and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then - for the second time in the history of the world - man will have discovered fire." - Tielhard de Chardin - French Jesuit poet, scientist and writer 1881 - 1953

Matthew 5:42 "Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'
44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
45 "that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
46 "For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47 "And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so?
48 "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 22:
37 Jesus said to him," 'You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'
38 "This is the first and great commandment.
39 "And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'
40 "On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

John 14:
27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 "You have heard Me say to you, 'I am going away and coming back to you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is greater than I.
29 "And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe.
30 "I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.
31 "But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

1 Corinthians 13:
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.
4 Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;
5 does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;
6 does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
8 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.
13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

It won't come to you automatically

Richard Bach quote "You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however."

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
